A LAYERED, CHARACTERFUL HOME WITH A DISTINCT IDENTITY
At Tia Kirwan Interiors, we create homes with depth, individuality and narrative. This two-bedroom London apartment was acquired in a neglected condition and entrusted to Tia Kirwan Interiors for a complete transformation. The brief was to craft a richly layered interior — distinctive, characterful and unapologetically individual — blending antiques, bespoke craftsmanship and decorative artistry into a cohesive whole.
The client asked Tia Kirwan Interiors for “something different”: a home that felt luxurious yet intimate, curated rather than conventional. This ambition guided every design decision. Tia Kirwan Interiors specified hand-painted chinoiserie wallpaper by de Gournay to envelop the walls, establishing a refined yet whimsical atmosphere. Bespoke joinery, painted in soft pale blues, was designed by Tia Kirwan Interiors to complement the delicacy of the wallcovering while introducing architectural structure and proportion.
In the adjoining kitchen, Tia Kirwan Interiors designed a hand-painted mirrored splashback that subtly reflects light and echoes the floral motifs, creating continuity and movement throughout the space.
Dining chairs by Kit Kemp, upholstered in a rich green textile selected by Tia Kirwan Interiors, introduce warmth and texture. Vaughan lighting and Soane Britain ironmongery were carefully specified to add further layers of heritage detailing and material richness. The principal bedroom, conceived by Tia Kirwan Interiors as a calm and elegant retreat, is washed in soft blues and greens. A hand-embroidered headboard commissioned from Natasha Hulse serves as a striking focal point, functioning as both artwork and statement.
Throughout the apartment, Tia Kirwan Interiors layered unexpected and personal details: framed herringbone suiting fabric from Savile Row displayed as artwork, antique furniture and gilded mirrors sourced from Battersea Fair, and carefully curated decorative objects. The result is a home that feels deeply personal and authentically collected.
Tia Kirwan Interiors delivered a full turnkey interior design service, overseeing every phase of the project — from concept design and technical detailing through contractor coordination, procurement, installation and final styling. By collaborating closely with specialist craftsmen, antique dealers and artisans, Tia Kirwan Interiors ensured that each element was executed with precision, integrity and care.
The completed apartment reflects the ethos of Tia Kirwan Interiors: intimate, expressive and confidently individual — where craftsmanship, storytelling and decoration combine seamlessly.

NORTH YORKSHIRE BARN CONVERSION
Originally built as a barn in 1731, this North Yorkshire property was purchased as a complete shell, without any soft furnishings or interior detailing. Commissioned by the owners, Tia Kirwan Interiors was tasked with transforming the historic structure into a richly layered and highly considered home, while carefully respecting its architectural heritage.
The project, led by Tia Kirwan Interiors, involved a full-house refurbishment and was completed over two years, allowing the interiors to evolve thoughtfully and organically. The drawing room is layered with antiques and enveloped in a deep burgundy wallcovering, creating warmth, intimacy, and gravitas. In contrast, the dining room features a hand-painted green pine landscape wallcovering by de Gournay, adding depth, narrative, and a painterly quality to the space.
Finishes throughout, curated by Tia Kirwan Interiors, are deliberately tactile and characterful. The home is furnished with a considered mix of antiques sourced from France and Italy, Belgian tapestries, and bespoke pieces. A Robert Kime armchair and cushions from Pimlico sit alongside Andrew Martin fabrics and wallpapers in the principal bedroom. These are complemented by locally sourced flea-market finds, antique plates, handmade lampshades, and carefully selected cushions — all contributing to an eclectic yet cohesive atmosphere.
Much of the furniture was reupholstered or restored under the direction of Tia Kirwan Interiors, ensuring authenticity and longevity while maintaining comfort and usability. The overall design approach focused on symmetry, balance, and proportion, creating interiors that feel both elegant and lived-in.
At Tia Kirwan Interiors, we specialise in transforming period properties into refined, layered homes that honour their heritage while embracing contemporary comfort. From historical research and sourcing through auction houses to commissioning artisans and managing installation, every project by Tia Kirwan Interiors is approached with care, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for architectural integrity.
